Capped composite versus PVC, in plain language
Capped composite is a wood-flour and plastic core with a hard polymer shell. It feels solid underfoot and carries the widest range of colors and grain patterns.
PVC has no wood in it at all. It weighs less, stays cooler in direct sun and costs more. Azek is the PVC line most people around here have heard of.
Both are low maintenance. If your deck bakes in full afternoon sun with no shade, PVC is worth the conversation. Otherwise capped composite is the value pick.

A composite deck is only as good as the frame under it
This is where cheap composite decks go wrong. Composite boards need tighter joist spacing than wood, and they telegraph every dip in a sloppy frame.
We frame in pressure-treated lumber to the spacing the manufacturer specifies, not the spacing that saves us an hour. Get the frame wrong and a 50 year board sits on a 10 year structure.

How much does a composite deck cost?
Composite decks in the northwest suburbs typically run higher than wood up front and lower over the life of the deck. Board choice, size, height and railing system drive the number. Does composite decking get hot in the sun?
Darker boards get hot in direct summer sun, the same as any dark surface. Lighter colors and PVC lines like Azek run noticeably cooler. If your deck faces west with no shade, we will steer you toward a lighter board.
Is composite decking really maintenance free?
No, and anyone who says so is overselling it. Composite is low maintenance, not maintenance free. You still wash it, and you still clear leaves and standing debris. What you do not do is sand, stain or seal it.
How long does composite decking last?
Manufacturers warranty most capped composite for 25 to 50 years against fading, staining and structural failure. Real-world life depends heavily on the frame underneath, which is why we build the structure in pressure-treated lumber to the manufacturer's joist spacing.
Can I put composite boards on my existing deck frame?
Sometimes, and it is worth checking. If the frame is sound and the joist spacing works, re-decking costs meaningfully less than a full rebuild. We inspect the structure and tell you honestly. Read more about re-decking.
