A 42 by 12 Trex Whiskey Barrel deck in Lisle

In June 2026 we built a 42 by 12 Trex Whiskey Barrel deck across the entire back of a large home in Lisle, DuPage County. It sits low to the ground, so it needs no railing, and it steps down onto two poured concrete landings. Footings and framing went in on June 20 and the last board went down June 29.

What the homeowners wanted

One long outdoor floor off every door at the back of the house, rather than a deck off one door and grass off the others. The house has three sets of doors on the rear wall and a balcony above, and the yard is flat, so a low, wide deck made more sense than a raised one.

They picked a rich brown board to sit against the grey siding and asked for the steps to land on something solid.

How we built it

A 42 foot frame, kept low. The deck is about 500 square feet and sits close to grade along its whole length. Keeping a deck low is the single biggest thing that holds the price down: no tall posts, no guard railing, and a stair run that is two risers instead of ten. Our deck cost guide explains why height moves the number more than size does.

Concrete landings poured first. You can see them in the framing photos: formed and poured before the joists went over them, so the step-downs land on a level pad that will not sink.

Trex Whiskey Barrel boards. A deep brown capped composite with a strong grain. On a run this long the board direction and the seams matter, and they are laid so the eye runs the length of the deck.

Two step-downs, no railing. A low deck under 30 inches needs no guard, so the sight line from the house to the yard stays open. Wide corner steps at each end.

Lisle is in DuPage County; the village issues the deck permit and we file it as part of the job. See more of our work across the county on the DuPage County deck builders page, or what a ground-up build involves on the new deck construction page.
