A 16 by 20 Trex Foggy Wharf deck replacement in Hoffman Estates

In July 2026 we took down a 12 by 20 wood deck behind a raised ranch in Hoffman Estates and rebuilt it four feet wider: a 16 by 20 Trex Foggy Wharf deck with white Trex Select railing and a new stair run to the patio. The permit went through the village's Code Enforcement office.

What the homeowners wanted

More room, and no more staining. The old deck was 12 by 20 and sat off the main floor of a raised ranch, a full storey above the yard. The family has an above-ground pool, and the deck is where they watch it from, so they wanted a surface wide enough to put a table and chairs on without blocking the door.

They also wanted the stairs to land on the patio slab instead of the grass.

How we built it

Tear-out first. The old deck came off down to the ledger. With the siding exposed we could check the rim joist behind it before bolting anything new to the house. That is the part of a replacement nobody sees and the part that matters most.

A wider frame on 6x6 posts. The new deck is 16 by 20, four feet wider than the old one. Hoffman Estates publishes its own pier rules: 42 inches below grade, and piers inside the foundation over-dig (within about 5 feet of the house wall) go all the way to footing depth. We frame to those numbers on every job here. The village also wants posts sitting on top of concrete piers, never buried, which is how these are set.

Trex Foggy Wharf on top. A grey capped composite board. It does not need staining, it does not splinter, and the grey reads well against the tan siding. Joists run at the spacing Trex specifies so the boards stay flat.

White Trex Select railing and a full stair run. Square white balusters on all three open sides and down the stairs, which now land on the patio. Guard openings are tight enough that a 4 inch sphere cannot pass, which is the village's rule and ours.
