A composite deck rebuild with black aluminum railing in Bloomingdale

In June 2026 we tore out a rotted wood deck sitting on a brick base behind a two-storey home in Bloomingdale and rebuilt it in brown composite with black aluminum railing, one step down to the lawn. The job ran from tear-out on June 10 to the last board on June 25.

What the homeowners wanted

The old deck was low to the ground and its framing had rotted where it sat on a brick base under the French doors. You can see it in the first photo: the boards are off and what is left is dark, soft wood.

They wanted the same footprint, off the same doors, in a surface they would not have to treat, with a railing that did not block the view of the yard.

How we built it

Everything old came out. Boards, joists and the brick they sat on. A low deck is the easiest kind to rebuild badly, because it is tempting to leave the old frame in place. We did not.

A new pressure-treated frame with joist tape. The black strips on the joists in the framing photos are joist tape. It keeps water from sitting on the top edge of each joist under the boards, which is where a frame rots first. The railing posts went in through the frame before any boards went down, so they are tied to the structure rather than bolted to the surface.

Brown composite boards and black aluminum railing. Capped composite on top, so the surface shrugs off rain and sun without staining. Black powder-coated aluminum railing, slim enough to disappear against the yard. One wide step down to the grass.

Bloomingdale deck permits run through the Village of Bloomingdale Building Department, and we handle the filing and inspections on every job. Read more on our Bloomingdale deck builder page, or see how a tear-out and rebuild runs on the deck replacement page.
