Warm brown composite deck with cascading corner steps down to a paver patio

Quick answer

Trex is capped composite, so it runs $55 to $80 per square foot installed here and carries a 25 to 50 year warranty. Washing is the only upkeep. Trex sells in three lines, and the difference between them is mostly how the cap is finished and how convincing the grain looks up close. Get a free estimate.

Why Trex is the most-installed board on our trucks

The best value into real composite

Trex's entry line is usually the least expensive genuine way out of staining. For a lot of homeowners here it is the board that makes composite affordable at all.

Buyers know the name

"Trex deck" is the phrase people recognize in a listing. That recognition is worth something when you sell, and no other composite brand has as much of it.

Built largely from reclaimed material

Trex boards use a high proportion of reclaimed wood and plastic film. If that matters to you, it is genuinely central to how the product is made rather than a marketing line.

The lines, and what actually separates them

Trex sells in tiers, and the jump between them is mostly about how the cap is finished and how convincing the grain looks up close.

  • Enhance is the entry range. Solid performance, fewer colors, the cheapest way in.
  • Select sits in the middle with a broader palette.
  • Transcend is the premium range, with the deepest grain detail and the strongest fade and stain coverage.

Warranties typically run 25 to 50 years depending on the line. Confirm the current terms for whichever line you choose, because manufacturers revise them.

Heat, color and Illinois sun

This is the honest limitation. Darker Trex boards get hot in direct summer sun, the same as any dark surface. On a west-facing deck with no shade you will notice it barefoot in August.

Two fixes. Go lighter, which helps a lot and costs nothing. Or go PVC, where AZEK runs noticeably cooler and costs more.

If your deck sits under tree cover or faces north or east, this is a non-issue and Trex is usually the value pick.

Pressure-treated deck framing and joists going in over a sloped yard before decking is installed

Trex on the wrong frame is still a bad deck

Trex publishes joist spacing requirements, and they are tighter than what wood decking tolerates. Spacing that is fine under a cedar board will feel bouncy under composite and can void the warranty.

We frame in pressure-treated lumber at the spacing Trex specifies, with footings below the frost line at your village's required depth. A 50 year board on a 10 year frame is a 10 year deck, and no warranty covers the structure underneath.

That framing standard is the same one we use on every new deck build.

Trex decking questions

How much does a Trex deck cost in the northwest suburbs?

Trex decks here typically land in the $55 to $80 per square foot range installed, which puts a 16x20 deck somewhere around $17,600 to $25,600. Entry-line Trex sits at the bottom of that band and Transcend at the top. Height, stairs and railing choice move it more than the board line does. That is a typical range and not a quote. See the 2026 deck cost guide for the full breakdown.

Are you a certified Trex installer?

No. We install Trex constantly and have for years, but we do not hold a manufacturer tier and we will not claim one. What matters more for your deck is whether the installer frames to Trex's joist spacing and pulls the permit, and we do both.

How long does a Trex deck last?

Trex warranties its capped boards for 25 to 50 years depending on the line, against fading, staining and structural failure. Real-world life comes down to the frame underneath, which is why joist spacing and footing depth matter more than the line you picked.

Does Trex get hot in the sun?

Darker colors do, in direct summer sun. Lighter Trex colors run noticeably cooler and cost the same. If your deck faces west with no shade and you want the coolest option available, look at PVC instead.

Can I put Trex on my existing deck frame?

Sometimes. The frame has to be structurally sound and the joist spacing has to meet Trex's requirement, which is tighter than wood decking needs. If the spacing is too wide we can often sister in joists rather than rebuild. We check during a free inspection. See re-decking.

Trex or TimberTech, which should I choose?

Trex for value and name recognition, TimberTech if heat is a real problem or you want the longest warranty. For most yards in this area the color you actually like is a better tiebreaker than the spec sheet. Full comparison in Trex vs TimberTech.
