What you actually get for the premium
The coolest surface available
PVC does not hold heat the way a wood-filled composite core does. On a west-facing deck with no shade this is the single biggest comfort difference you can buy.
50 year warranty
The longest coverage in the category, against fading, staining and structural failure. On a deck you plan to keep, that changes the cost-per-year maths considerably.
Nothing for moisture to get into
No wood flour in the core means no food source for mould and nothing to absorb water. It is the most forgiving board for shaded, damp or poolside decks.
Where PVC is worth the money, and where it is not
The heat difference is real, not marketing
Standard capped composite has wood flour in the core, and wood holds heat. PVC does not. In practice that means a light AZEK board in full August sun is walkable barefoot when a dark composite board on the same deck would not be.
Color still matters as much as material. A dark AZEK board will be hotter than a light composite one. If heat is the reason you are here, go PVC and go light. That combination is the coolest deck surface you can buy.
When we would talk you out of it
AZEK is the most expensive board we install, and it is not always the right spend.
- A shaded deck. If your deck sits under mature trees or faces north, you are paying a heat premium for a problem you do not have.
- A tight budget. The difference between AZEK and entry-line Trex on a large deck is thousands. Sometimes that money is better spent on square footage or a proper stair run.
- A short stay. A 50 year warranty is worth less if you are moving in four years.
We would rather tell you that at the estimate than sell you the top of the range by default.
PVC moves more, so the install has to account for it
PVC expands and contracts with temperature more than composite does. That is the one genuine handling difference and it is entirely an installer problem.
Boards have to be gapped to the manufacturer's figures for the temperature on the day they go down. Install tight on a cold morning and the deck buckles in July. Install too loose in August and you live with wide gaps all winter.
We gap to TimberTech's published figures for the install conditions and frame in pressure-treated at their specified joist spacing, over footings below the frost line at your village's required depth.

Is AZEK the same as TimberTech?
AZEK is TimberTech's premium PVC line, not a separate company. TimberTech sells both capped composite and capped PVC, and the PVC boards carry the AZEK name. So every AZEK deck is a TimberTech deck, but not every TimberTech deck is AZEK.
How much more does AZEK cost than composite?
AZEK typically runs around $65 to $90 per square foot installed here, against roughly $55 to $80 for capped composite. On a 320 square foot deck that is often a few thousand dollars. That is a typical range and not a quote. See the 2026 deck cost guide.
Does AZEK really stay cooler?
Yes, and it is the clearest practical reason to choose it. PVC has no wood flour in the core to hold heat. Color still matters, so the coolest deck you can build is a light PVC board. On a shaded deck the advantage largely disappears.
Does PVC decking look like plastic?
The current premium lines do not, and this is where AZEK has improved most. Their multi-tone boards hold up to close inspection. That said, if you want something that genuinely is wood, we still build cedar and pressure-treated decks.
Is AZEK good for a pool deck?
It is one of the better choices, because there is no wood in the core to absorb splash-out and nothing for mould to feed on. If wet-surface traction is your main concern, Deckorators is worth comparing, since their mineral-based boards are built specifically around grip.
Do you hold an AZEK or TimberTech installer badge?
No. We install these boards regularly and follow the published spacing, fastener and gapping requirements, but we do not hold a manufacturer tier and we will not claim one. With PVC, correct gapping for the install temperature protects your warranty more than any badge does.
