A 14 by 20 TimberTech Coconut Husk deck replacement in South Elgin
In June 2026 we removed the 6 by 6 landing a builder had left behind a new home in South Elgin and built a 14 by 20 TimberTech Coconut Husk deck in its place, with black Trex Select railing and a stair run down to a concrete pad. The yard backs onto a pond.

What the homeowners wanted
A real deck instead of a landing. New subdivisions around here often come with a 6 by 6 platform and a set of stairs at the back door, which is enough to get out of the house and not enough to sit on.
The back door is a full floor above the yard, and the yard runs down to a pond, so they wanted something big enough for a table and a grill with a railing they could see through.
How we built it
The old landing came out and new footings went in for a 14 by 20 frame on 6x6 posts. The deck sits at the height of the door, which puts the surface about eight feet up at the far corner.
TimberTech Coconut Husk on top. A tan capped composite with a warm, varied grain. It is lighter in colour than most of the brown boards we install, which keeps it cooler underfoot on a deck that gets full sun off the water.
Black Trex Select railing. Black railing on a tan deck against white siding is a combination we install a lot, because it reads clean from the yard. The balusters are slim, so from the deck the pond is what you see.
Stairs to a concrete pad. The stair run comes down the side of the deck and lands on a poured pad rather than the grass, so the bottom step stays level and dry.
The Village of South Elgin issues the permit for a deck here; we file it and handle the inspections as part of every job. Read more on our South Elgin deck builder page, or see what goes into a tear-out and rebuild on the deck replacement page.
